Meet Joseph R. Larson, DMD, MD

A dual-degree oral surgeon and physician, Dr. Larson appreciates every opportunity to make a life-changing impact on his patients’ lives.

About Dr. Larson

A Michigan native, Dr. Larson is from Ludington and discovered his passion for oral surgery early in dental school. He was attracted to the broad scope of treatment, from alleviating pain and preventing future pathology to repairing debilitating facial injuries and correcting jaw deformities. He has significant experience with dental implants, bone grafting, extractions, jaw surgery, and the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Upon completing his residency, he opened Breakwater Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implants with the goal of providing the West Michigan lakeshore communities with exceptional and compassionate care. He established a practice focused entirely on the patient and fosters a warm, friendly atmosphere where patients can expect an unparalleled oral surgery experience.

Dr. Larson frequently collaborates with other dental professionals and is passionate about serving as a positive figure in his community. He loves forming meaningful connections with patients and earning their trust so they feel like a part of the family. He also has a passion for mentoring and continues to inspire and educate students to pursue their career goals in the dental or medical field.

From the moment patients walk through the door, they can expect to be greeted by friendly faces in an environment designed to help our patients feel at home. Dr. Larson offers a variety of anesthesia options and tailors the oral surgery experience around a patients’ unique needs, going above and beyond to help them feel comfortable.

Education & Residency

Dr. Larson earned a BS in human biology from Michigan State University in 2012. He earned his dental degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2016 and his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2019. Following his degrees, Dr. Larson completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Michigan in 2022.

Certifications

Dr. Larson is board-eligible and is a member of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the Chalmers J. Lyons Academy. He maintains certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Basic Life Support (BLS).

Hobbies & Interests

Dr. Larson loves spending time with his wife, his son (aka his mini-me), and their two golden retrievers. They love going out and enjoying the beautiful parks and water in West Michigan together. Dr. Larson also enjoys off-roading, hiking, watching Formula 1 racing, and playing sports. He was into baseball, hockey, tennis, and golf growing up and played a year of Division 1 baseball in college. Now, he focuses on his golf game and playing tennis.
